LILY DUNLAP
ST. JOHN’S SCHOOL - HOUSTON, TX
Lily Dunlap, a junior on the St. John’s Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team, is a remarkable example of courage, strength, and resilience. Diagnosed with hearing loss at a young age, she navigated life with hearing aids while being a role model for her younger brother. Her determination grew even stronger when, in 2024, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Despite enduring chemotherapy and losing her hair, Lily remained focused on her recovery and her love for basketball. She returned to the court after treatment, earning a standing ovation when she hit a three-pointer. Lily's unwavering spirit, dedication to her team, and inspiring journey make her an exceptional winner of the Jersey Mike’s Subs Naismith High School Basketball Courage Award.

It is with immense pride and admiration that I nominate Lily Dunlap for the Jersey Mike’s Subs Naismith
High School Basketball Courage Award. As a junior on our St. John’s Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team, Lily
has exemplified the true meaning of courage, both on and off the court. Her journey is one of resilience,
strength, and unshakeable determination; qualities that not only define her as an athlete but also as a
role model and an inspiration to those around her. Diagnosed with hearing loss at the age of four, Lily
faced a challenge that many would find overwhelming. Wearing hearing aids every day, Lily never let her
hearing loss define her. In fact, it became a part of who she is. A challenge she met with quiet strength
and maturity. Her hearing loss wasn’t just a personal challenge. It was one she also had to navigate as an
older sister, being a role model for her younger brother, who also wears hearing aids. It may seem that
Lily’s courage was simply about coping with her hearing aids, but her story is so much more than that.
Just when her resilience in the face of hearing loss seemed like the greatest test of her strength, Lily’s
journey took a devastating turn. In the spring of 2024, Lily’s life took an unexpected and difficult turn.
After battling a series of health issues, including strep throat and a persistent sinus infection, she was
diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Despite this devastating diagnosis, Lily remained strong
and resolute. On the very day she received her biopsy results, Lily drove to Dallas to compete in a high-
stakes basketball tournament with her club team. This was just beginning of her journey, and it became
clear that nothing, especially cancer, would take away her passion for the game. Lily’s fight with cancer
included 12 rounds of chemotherapy, each one spaced two weeks apart. Through all of the physical and
emotional hardships of her treatment, she never let her health struggles define her. Instead, she
focused on her recovery and her return to the court. Even during the grueling weeks of treatment, Lily
maintained her dedication to her team, staying connected to her teammates and working hard in the
weight room and on the basketball court to rebuild her strength. One of the most poignant moments of
Lily’s journey was when she lost all of her hair as a result of the chemotherapy. Rather than allowing the
physical change to deter her, Lily embraced her new look. Throughout the school day, she wore a
beautiful halo wig made from her own hair, and for practices and games, she switched to a beanie. One
of the most unforgettable moments in her journey came just days after her port was removed, marking
the end of 12 rounds of chemotherapy. All Lily could think about was playing in her first game of the
season. The anticipation built as she stepped onto the court, with her parents and siblings cheering from
the stands. When she sank a three-pointer, the entire gym erupted in celebration. While the team
celebrated the victory, the real celebration was Lily’s return to the game she loves, and the moment she
demonstrated to her teammates and everyone around her that courage is not just about overcoming
physical challenges, but about staying true to yourself, no matter what. Lily’s courage transcends sports.
It is her relentless spirit, her unwavering faith, and her dedication to her team and family that make her
a true example of what it means to be courageous. As her coach, I am incredibly proud of everything Lily
has accomplished and how she has handled every challenge with such dignity. She is a true inspiration,
and there is no one more deserving of this award than Lily Dunlap.

Life often tests people with challenges that seem too much to bear, some individuals get consumed by these challenges, and others not only survive it, but excel in ways that inspire others. One student that has inspired our whole school community is Davon Ciesiolka. I have had the privilege of knowing Davon for four years, and I can say without hesitation that he embodies the qualities of resilience, leadership, and unwavering determination that this award is looking for. His story is one of courage in the face of unimaginable hardship and a relentless drive to improve not only his own life but the lives of those around him. Davon’s journey has been anything but easy. Growing up, Davon faced numerous obstacles, including his dad being in jail most of his childhood, and a house fire in 8th grade that displaced him and his family. The fire at his home in Detroit forced him to move in with his grandmother, and later, to relocate to Clinton Township where we were fortunate enough to get him as a student. Despite these upheavals, Davon remained committed to his education, athletics, and personal growth. He started high school at Clintondale, where he quickly became a recognized leader, both on and off the court. It was in fall of 2022 that Davon’s life took an unexpected and heartbreaking turn. His mother, the family’s primary caregiver, passed away shortly after giving birth to his youngest sibling. This tragic event was extremely difficult for Davon, as he lost not only his mother but his main source of support. His grandmother had to move into his mother's apartment to care for Davon, his two older special-needs brothers, and his 3 younger siblings, while one of his siblings left the home to live with his other parent.
Yet, despite these overwhelming challenges, Davon remained the rock for his family. He stepped up as a caretaker for his siblings and faced the harsh reality of his new circumstances with remarkable poise and determination. As a student, Davon has always been dependable, driven, and focused. He consistently holds himself to high standards, excelling in academics (3.4 GPA) and balancing multiple extracurricular activities, including being the captain of both the basketball and football teams, being a part of the National Honor Society, a member of Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars, and working at McDonald’s.
He academically pushes himself by being the leader for projects in his advanced robotics class, and taking dual enrollment courses at the local community college. His leadership extends beyond his athletic abilities—he has become a role model to his peers. Davon takes his responsibilities as team captain seriously, not only by holding himself accountable but by demanding the same of his teammates. Whether in practice, during games, or in everyday life, he encourages others to be disciplined, to take pride in their work, and to aim higher. He is the kind of leader who leads by exampleand is never afraid to intervene when he sees something that isn’t right. His coaches say he’s the ‘dad’ of the team - because he takes personal accountability for his teammates and their actions. His ability to address challenges head-on, whether they are personal or interpersonal, has made him a valuable presence in the school community. Davon’s courage in the wake of this immense loss has been truly inspiring. Instead of succumbing to despair, he has chosen to rise above, taking on the responsibility of his family while still managing to excel in school and sports. His resilience in the face of adversity is evident in every action he takes, whether it's being the first to volunteer to help others or being the one that keeps his teammates and classmates grounded. Even though the weight of his personal struggles could have easily derailed him, Davon remains a steadfast role model to his peers, showing them that perseverance, hard work, and integrity can help overcome even the most trying of circumstances. What sets Davon apart, however, is his deep sense of responsibility to do what’s right, even when it’s difficult.
When he sees a problem, whether in his personal life or within his school community, he doesn’t shy away from it—he faces it head-on. If there’s an issue that needs to be addressed, Davon isn’t afraid to step up and intervene, often involving the appropriate adults to ensure the situation is resolved. He consistently strives to do what’s best for those around him, embodying the qualities of leadership and responsibility that so many others can look up to. Davon’s journey is one of constant growth, strength, and unwavering belief in the importance of family, community, and responsibility. His ability to remain confident and determined, even in the face of adversity, speaks volumes about his character. He has shown time and again that no matter what life throws his way, he will continue to rise, to lead, and to inspire those around him. He is the epitome of courage, determination, and resilience, and I am proud to be able to support him in his future endeavors. In a world where challenges often seem insurmountable, Davon Ciesiolka is a living example of the power of perseverance, leadership, and the unwavering belief that no matter what happens, we can choose how we respond. He has faced more challenges than most, yet he continues to rise to the occasion with bravery, grace, and a steadfast commitment to doing the right thing. It is this strength and character that makes Davon not just a deserving candidate for this award, but an individual who will undoubtedly go on to achieve great things in the future.
