Althoff Catholic High School - Belleville, IL

GABBY ORLET

Gabby, diagnosed with a Giant Cell Tumor on her spine in 2021, faced two surgeries to remove the tumor, replace the T-11 vertebra, and receive support for her vertebrae. Despite challenges, she re-learned to sit up, stand, and walk during her hospital stay. In March 2022, the cancer returned to her spine and lungs, leading to inoperable lung lesions. Gabby now undergoes lifelong chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Despite the toll on her health, she continues to play sports and attend school. Throughout the '21-'22 school year, she sat out of sports after relearning to walk, played volleyball and soccer, and this year participated in not one but three sports. Gabby's resilience and determination are truly incredible.

“the fact that she continues to play and make it to school is astounding. I have never met anyone as tough and determined as Gabby.”

- Kathy Wuller, Athletic Director at Althoff Catholic High School

  • In April 2021, Gabby was diagnosed with a Giant Cell Tumor on her spine that destroyed her T-11 vertebra. Two surgeries in the next few days were performed to remove the tumor, replace the T-11 vertebra, and put a cage in place to further support her vertebrae. During her ten days in the hospital, Gabby learned to sit up, stand, and eventually walk again. In March 2022, doctors determined that the cancer had returned to the original site and to her lungs. Due to the nature of this type of cancer, the lung lesions are inoperable and Gabby will need to undergo chemotherapy and immunotherapy for the rest of her life. Her chemotherapy that she receives really takes a toll on her so the fact that she continues to play and make it to school is astounding. I have never met anyone as tough and determined as Gabby.

During the ‘21-’22 school year, she had to sit out of all sports after learning to walk again.

During the ‘21-’22 school year, she played volleyball and soccer.

This year she played volleyball, playing basketball and will play soccer.

    She is incredible.
